For purpose of review we performed some testing for overblocking (sites that got mistakenly blocked) and underblocking (sites that got mistakenly allowed). The internet filter of user's dream should observe a little percentage of such mistakes.

In terms of over- and underblocking Net Nanny showed good results for the reason that it does more than just testing website’s address against the list of disallowed URLs. It scans every site you visit in real-time. After required scanning, only those elements of filtering site content that are considered inappropriate are blocked from showing onscreen. As it was stated earlier, this has a downside concerning increased time of page loading. But pros of the filtering are much more important than cons. Net Nanny also keeps the user from visiting sites that include unwanted keywords entered by parents.

The program supports filtering the content over SSL (HTTPS) encrypted connection. The advantage of this feature is that Ne Nanny can prevent using of proxy servers that are commonly used for bypassing filters.
Net Nanny gained good results in every test we performed. Good, but still not perfect. Although it proves to be better than virtually all other competitors, we must honestly characterize it as a bit overprotective. The software mistakenly overblocks every now and then, however with an option of overriding the block with the password this problem should not be too frustrating. You won’t argue that some overblocking is better than occasional breach of inappropriate and objectionable content.

As for underblocking, only very little amount of such cases occurred. Net Nanny surprised us by the fact that it doesn’t underblock websites containing foreign languages. (Most online filtering software fails detecting adult and explicit content on foreign websites.)

Net Nanny is not only dealing with websites, this software was designed with other concerns in mind as well. The program can investigate and block other aspects of online activity, such as instant or private messaging. Needless to say, the level of filtering can be adjusted precisely.

At the same time, you don’t totally prohibit internet access. That’s the very point of Net Nanny – it doesn’t come with ultimatums, it gives flexible options instead.
